Angelica root CO2 vs Angelica root essential oil
Angelica root is CO2 extracted, and is therefore different from the steam-distilled angelica essential oil. Angelica CO2 extract smells exactly like the original herb itself, darker reddish- brown in colour, and thicker viscosity whereas Angelica essential oil smells more perfume-like and its volatile and watery, light brown in colour and overall less potent. CO2 extracts contain unique and heavier molecules that cannot be extracted by steam distillation. By choosing this CO2 extracted option, you reap the complete benefits of the whole plant itself. That is why Vizü decided to source for the highest quality CO2 extraction of Angelica which is most often prized by Chinese herbalists and practitioners of herbal medicine.
Angelica Sinensis Radix
Angelica has been praised for its virtues since antiquity. All parts of the plant are edible: the shoots are added to a salad, the stalks are eaten like celery or candied as a confectionery, the roots are steamed as vegetables, and the seeds are used to flavour baked goods. It has very strong medicinal values, which helps strengthen the heart and immune system, also stimulating blood circulation. Angelica of different species have been used for centuries in Europe, China, Japan and Korea. Each of them possesses a different chemo-type, thus having different properties as well. Angelica oil is highly valued as a fragrance in perfumes and is used as a flavouring ingredient in foods, soft drinks, and liqueurs.
VIZÜ’s Angelica Sinensis Radix is native to China. This herb has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for nearly 2000 years. This species, also known as dang gui / dong guai, Women’s Ginseng, or 当归 in written mandarin. It is well known for the treatment of various ailments such as gynecological diseases, apoplexia, constipation, malaria, chills, fever, and hemorrhoids. The plant has also been used as a hematinic for nourishing blood, regulating menstruation, and relaxing bowels. Both the seeds and roots yield an essential oil. The seeds produce a greater oil content, and the root oil has a stronger odour.
Clinical studies have shown that Angelica CO2 extract has a relaxing effect on the uterine muscles and is effective in reducing menstrual pain; which is also our key ingredient in VIZU's herbal remedy PERIOD PAIN formulation. Modern pharmacologic research has shown that Angelica Sinensis Radix has anti-coagulation and anti-inflammation properties. Z-ligustilide, presented in the oil of Angelica Sinensis Radix, can inhibit platelet aggregation, resist oxidation, reduce ischemic brain injury, and blood pressure, and so on. Medical research has also reported that Angelica Sinensis Radix CO2 extract exhibited colortectal cancer preventive potential. In 2019, there was also an interesting article of anti-depression effect of Angelica Sinensis Radix extract in which it is able to reverse the disorders of hyposixa, depression symptoms and anemia induced by CUMS (chronic unpredictable mild stress). The research was suggesting that angelica extract may have helped with the promotion of the body’s energy metabolism, the stabilization of the cell membrane, the promotion of serum protein synthesis, and the enhancement of immunity. This therefore in turn improving CUMS-induced disorders.
In Europe, the plant has been used as a remedy for coughs, colds, breathing congestion, stomach upsets, aching joints, urinary tract complaints, as a blood purifier, and to improve circulation. During the 1665 plague, the stems were chewed to prevent infection. The seeds and roots were burned to disinfect the air. The roots were also dried, powdered, and mixed with vinegar to disinfect linen and clothing when washing.
In England, angelica was incorporated into rituals and worn for protection against evil spirits and spells. The American Indians took angelica as an expectorant for respiratory congestion and tuberculosis, a tonic to recover from illness, and to expel worms. In Asia, angelica is a highly regarded herb that is used to correct menstrual irregularities, promote female fertility, and as a tonic for the liver.
