Arnica CO2 vs Infused arnica oil

Arnica flower is CO2 extracted, and is not steam-distilled arnica essential oil. Because the volatile essential oil content in arnica flowers is extremely little; it is therefore extremely difficult to cultivate. Most of the commercial arnica oils out in the market are infused arnica oil (dried or fresh arnica flowers macerated in a carrier oil base). Arnica CO2 extract is a slow-moving viscous liquid and has more bitter aroma, deeper brown in colour compared to infused arnica oil which is yellow in colour and of natural liquidy oil consistency. Infused oils are the weakest but safest form of oil extraction as the properties of arnica flowers are extremely mild. CO2 extracts contain almost the full range of active ingredients that cannot be extracted by infusion method. By choosing this CO2 extracted option, you reap the complete benefits of the whole plant itself. That is why Vizü decided to source for the highest quality CO2 extraction of Arnica which is most often prized by herbalists and practitioners of herbal medicine.

What is CO2 extract?
CO2 extracted oils are high quality oils extracted using carbon dioxide in liquid form, as the solvent for lipophilic plant ingredients. There are not any waste streams and emissions involved in this eco-friendly technology. When carbon dioxide is converted to liquid by using low temperatures and high pressure, it becomes a safe and effective solvent that allows all the desirable active constituents of the botanical to be collected without the risk of heat, light and air (oxygen) degradation. Once the extraction is complete, the carbon dioxide is allowed to return to its natural gaseous state, leaving behind only the extracted essence of the plant. CO2 extracted oils are the closest representation of the natural plant ever achieved. Highly concentrated and more complete than essential oils, these CO2 extracts can be used at low amount in carrier oils and other base products.

Arnica, a perennial alpine herb native to Europe, and also found growing wild in Russia, Scandinavia and northern India. Arnica’s derived from the Greek word “arnakis”, which means “lamb’s skin”, referring to its downy wooly leaves.
