What are CO2 extracts?
CO2 extracted oils are high quality oils extracted using carbon dioxide in liquid form, as the solvent for lipophilic plant ingredients. There are not any waste streams and emissions involved in this eco-friendly technology. When carbon dioxide is converted to liquid by using low temperatures and high pressure, it becomes a safe and effective solvent that allows all the desirable active constituents of the botanical to be collected without the risk of heat, light and air (oxygen) degradation. Once the extraction is complete, the carbon dioxide is allowed to return to its natural gaseous state, leaving behind only the extracted essence of the plant.
CO2 extracts contain most of the plant’s original components, including waxes, fatty oils, and colour pigments, hence the hue, scent and texture of a CO2 extract is a lot more intense and is the closest to the original plant itself.
CO2 extracted oils are food and medical grade, often used in the food industry and in dietary supplement products.
Camellia oleifera
Green, black, white and oolong tea leaves are harvested from camellia oleifera and sometimes camellia sinensis. These species are also popularly known as the "tea plant". Like it’s tea products, camellia extract exhibits exceptional antioxidant activity. Although camellia oil is often referred to as tea oil or tea seed oil, it should not be confused with the volatile essential oil of tea tree.
Camellia seed extract is a rich source of oleic acid (almost 85%), other omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids plus Vitamin A, B, C, E and polyphenols. These properties contribute to excellent use on hair and skin conditioning. This extract does not clog pores nor leave an oily feel, due to tannins present in the seeds. It is an astringent oil, thus making it a wise choice for oily or problematic skin.
Camellia seed oil offers similar nutritive and culinary properties to olive oil, often titled “Eastern olive oil.” The culinary use of camellia seed oil throughout the world has been on the rise over the past few years. Camellia seed oil was recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as a high-quality, healthy vegetable oil because of its nutritional value and excellent storage qualities.
