Plants produce UV protection compounds to protect themselves from the damage that excess UV radiation (from sunlight) can cause to its photosynthesis machinery. The more sun the plant is exposed to, the higher density of the sunscreening molecules it produces.

The botanical oils/extracts used in VIZÜ's Sun Protection series are scientifically proven to be able to absorb a wide range of UVA and UVB rays; and then destroying these UV rays within your skin. This is a biomechanism that only exists in plants. Humans are capable but only at a tiny fraction of what plants can do, therefore we get sunburn unlike these chosen sun-loving botanicals. These oils also offer photoprotection function which is a biochemical process which prevents oxidative stress and DNA damage caused by excessive sunlight. 

Using these oils will not only protect your skin from UV damage from sun, LED lights (lamps, computer and phone screens etc); they are also very rich source of molecules of varying functions, providing your skin with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. Chemical and mineral based sunscreens, besides from providing limited protection against specific wavebands of UV, offer none of the positive health benefits provided by the rich mix of plant antioxidants, vitamins and fats that plant oils contain. 

Natural SPF from some of the individual plants:

Carrot root CO2 extract – SPF 1.69 to 24.25

Carrot seed essential oil – SPF 6.92 to 18.80, absorbs all UVA between 320 – 340 nm and 70% of UVA after that

Almond seed oil – SPF 4.6, absorbs all UVA between 320 – 365 nm and 95% of UVA after that

Raspberry seed oil - SPF 28 to 50, PFA of 6.75-7.5.

Jojoba – absorbs all UVA between 320 – 345 nm and 65% of UVA after that

Pomegranate seed CO2 extract - chemopreventive oil shown to have the ability to prevent and heal UV induced skin cancers

What to expect

Upon first application of SUNGLOW, you will see your skin stays bright and glowy throughout the day! For both oils, you will notice your skin stays healthy and deeply hydrated. For those with sensitive skin, there will be less skin irritation and redness under the sun. 

This is not a sunscreen/sunblock - so do not depend on it entirely if you are planning to be under the afternoon sun for hours. You will still need to reapply often (to prevent sunburn) and use protective garments for your beach holidays.

Our responsibility to protect our ocean

By switching to natural sun protection products, we are protecting our most valuable ecosystem on Earth - coral reefs. Commercial sunscreen/sunblock stays on the surface of your skin to help shield and deflect UV rays by utilising mostly synthetic and unfortunately, marine-toxic ingredients in the formulation. Although it is effective with blocking out sunrays hitting on your skin surface, it is not effective for your skin health and extremely detrimental to our ocean and its marine ecosystem.

With these plant-based UV protection oils, the oils are fully absorbed into your skin and its repair + UV defence are now integrated within the skin layers. Our ocean will not get any form of contamination and moreover there are no artificially man-made elements that could leak into our waters.

Many cosmetic compounds have been found entering the environment both through wastewater effluent and directly from swimmers wearing sunscreens and is now a banned ingredient in many parts of the world. The study, published in the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, showed four major toxic effects in early, developing coral: increased susceptibility to bleaching; DNA damage; abnormal skeleton growth (via endocrine disruption); and gross deformities of baby coral.
