Sea buckthorn berry extract has always been used as a skincare oil. It is rich in nutrients and vitamins; the pigment of the fruit oil protects the fruit from oxidation; tocopherols and carotenes also protect human cells from free radical damage. Flavonoids, present in the sea buckthorn berry extract, in combination with carotene, is able to control the growth of virus and bacteria among skin cells.

Apart from having skin regeneration and repair properties, sea buckthorn oil also improves blood circulation, facilitates oxygenation of the skin, removes excess toxins from the body and easily penetrates through the epidermis. Because inside the skin the gamma-linolenic acid is converted to prostaglandins, sea-buckthorn oil protects against infections, prevents allergies, eliminates inflammation and inhibits the aging process.

Sea buckthorn berry extract is different from most other vegetable oils, but similar to macadamia nuts, both contain a large amount of palmitoleic acid. This is a monounsaturated fatty acid, also known as animal fatty acid, because it can be found almost exclusively in animal fats. According to clinical studies, oils containing high amounts of palmitoleic acid generally have excellent maintenance and moisturising effects. It is also a strong antioxidant – this oil rebuilds cells and delays cell ageing, supports wound healing, reduces scars and discolourations, treats dermatoses, eczemas, ulceration, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, improves skin elasticity and structure, provides appropriate hydration of epidermis, limits excessive water loss, protects against harmful radiation (solar or x-rays).

In Russia, sea buckthorn oil is used to treat skin damage caused by UV rays. It is also used as a “skin protection” oil for cancer patients before and after radiation therapy.
