Ingredient: Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil
Benefits and uses:
Jojoba is a plant that is happy to grow in hot and dry climate because it has developed a perfect system of protecting itself from dehydration. Its leaves and seeds produce wax esters that resist oxidation and store humidity, therefore Jojoba is praised for its incredible oxidative stability, together with smoothing and hydrating properties. Hence, Jojoba oil can last for many years if stored properly, which undoubtedly has become one of the most favourite oils to be used in the cosmetic industry today.
Jojoba is extremely rich in proteins and minerals. Its structure is similar to our human’s skin sebum. The protective factor of Jojoba helps mature or weather-exposed skin to retain moisture and also soften rough scaly skin conditions.
Although Jojoba is often used as a make-up remover, we personally find that it is a waste of such a good oil! This can be used as a versatile skin moisturizer from top to toe, perfect for holidays and fuss-free outdoor trips.
Did you know?
The seeds of Jojoba shrub are called goat nuts and this plant can live up to 200 years. This oil is often used as a substitute to sperm-whale oil. Jojoba wax is used to make candles, furniture polish, and floor wax, and in industry to lubricate machinery because it can withstand high temperatures.
Herbal Folk Tradition
Jojoba is an evergreen shrub native to the south-western United States and northern Mexico. In the ancient times, Jojoba oil has been used as a hair restorer.
It was said that the Native Americans were the first who made use of Jojoba. During the early 18th century, Jesuit missionaries on the Baja California Peninsula observed indigenous peoples heating jojoba seeds to soften them. They then used a mortar and pestle to create a salve or buttery substance. The latter was applied to the skin and hair to heal and condition. The O'odham people of the Sonoran Desert treated burns with an anti-oxidant salve made from a paste of the jojoba nut.
Native Americans also used the salve to soften and preserve animal hides. Pregnant women ate jojoba seeds, believing they assisted during childbirth. They also used the seeds and made them into a beverage that was similar to coffee.
