Botanical name: Cymbopogon winterianus
Precautions: Non-toxic, non-irritant; may cause dermatitis in some individuals. Avoid during pregnancy.
There are 2 varieties of Citronella – Ceylon variety (Cymbopogon nardus) and Java variety (Cymbopogon winterianus). The oil obtained from the Java variety is considered to be higher quality as there are higher concentrations of geraniol and citronellal than the Ceylon variety.
Besides Lemon eucalyptus, this Java Citronella species is the best EO to repel mosquitoes due to its exceptionally high citronellal content.
Herbal Folk Tradition
Many cultures use the leaves of Citronella for its fragrance and as a medicine for fever, intestinal parasites, digestive and menstrual problems, as a stimulant and an insect repellent.
It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine for rheumatic pain. In Brazilian folk medicine, Citronella is used for its anxiolytic, analgesic and anticonvulsant properties.
