What are CO2 extracts?

CO2 extracted oils are high quality oils extracted using carbon dioxide in liquid form, as the solvent for lipophilic plant ingredients. There are not any waste streams and emissions involved in this eco-friendly technology. When carbon dioxide is converted to liquid by using low temperatures and high pressure, it becomes a safe and effective solvent that allows all the desirable active constituents of the botanical to be collected without the risk of heat, light and air (oxygen) degradation. Once the extraction is complete, the carbon dioxide is allowed to return to its natural gaseous state, leaving behind only the extracted essence of the plant.

CO2 extracts contain most of the plant’s original components, including waxes, fatty oils, and colour pigments, hence the hue, scent and texture of a CO2 extract is a lot more intense and is the closest to the original plant itself.

CO2 extracted oils are food and medical grade, often used in the food industry and in dietary supplement products.

Panicum miliaceum

Proso millet has very low oil content, thus therefore best extracted with supercritical CO2. It contains around 1.4% of miliacin (it is a pentacyclic triterpene related to phytosterols), which encourages cell division and are important cell membrane components with protective and anti-aging efficacy. This is very beneficial for cellular renewal in the hair bulb (anti-hair loss) and wound healing. Read here for the report.

A latest study published in February 2018 by a team of Taiwan researchers have confirmed that Proso millet has positive results in skin lightening through melanogenesis. Read here for the report.

Millet CO2 extract is super high in omega-6 fatty acids, has squalene and is relatively high in sterols and tocotrienols. In general, millet CO2 extract activates skin repair mechanisms which will lead to bright and healthy skin.

Did you know?

It takes around 28kg of the tiny seed to produce just 1 kg of millet CO2 oil. This grass species is also named Proso millet and it is used as a crop. Proso millet is also sold as health food because it lacks of gluten, thus it can be included in the diets of people who cannot tolerate wheat.

Millet grains have been important food staples for both humans and livestock feed for hundreds of centuries. Proso millet is reported to have been domesticated about 10,000 years ago in central and eastern Asia. It moved from China to the Black sea region of Europe by 5000 BC and in 1875, German-Russian immigrants introduced it to North America. The name “Proso” is an in ancient Slavic used in Russia and Poland and it is a generic name for millet varieties.

Proso millet porridge is a traditional food in Russian, German and Chinese cuisines.  For the Tao people of Orchid Island in Taiwan, millets are used for brewing beer. The fermented millet is prepared in a large pit with boiling water and people share the drink by sipping it through long straws. Millet is also the base ingredient for the distilled liquor “Rakshi” in Nepal and the indigenous alcoholic drink “Tongba” in Nepal and India, and also the fermented drink “Boza” in Romania and Bulgaria.
